“Fervent strategic prayer can change things.  Even unchangeable things.”

Prayer in itself does not change our past mistakes, but it does allow us to rise above the sea level of Satan’s assaults from our past.

“One of the qualities that makes the gospel so real and so great is that it doesn’t eliminate our past but just so thoroughly deals with it.  God forgives it.  he changes it.  He transforms…So, now instead of being a reason for endless shame, guilt, and regret, our past is a reason for endless worship and free-flowing testimony.”

“If I were your enemy, I’d constantly remind you of your past mistakes and poor choices. I’d want to keep you burdened by shame and guilt, in hopes that you’ll feel incapacitated by your failings and see no point in even trying again. I’d work to convince you that you’ve had your chance and blown it — that your God may be able to forgive some people for some things, but not you….not for this. ”

— Fervent By Priscilla Shirer

Key Scriptures: Zechariah 3:1, Revelation 12:10, Ephesians 6:14-18

Key Points:

“One of the qualities that makes the gospel so real and so great is that it doesn’t eliminate our past but just so thoroughly deals with it. God forgives it. He changes it. He transforms all that mess into his huge mountain of grace that only takes us higher and closer to Him. So now instead of being a reason for endless shame, guilt, and regret, our past is a reason for endless worship and free-flowing testimony. And for continual, grateful, heartfelt prayer. ” — Fervent By Priscilla Shirer

Satan as our accuser

When Satan tries to remind you of all your past mistakes, you can know that he is a liar and his objective is to accuse you of sins that have been forgiven.

Remember: Our winning strategy is the combination of God’s Word and prayer.  Arm yourself with truth, God’s word and then PRAY like your life depends on it because it does!

Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do the above scriptures teach us as it relates to overcoming his lies?
  • Write down any lies Satan has told you because of your past.
  • Do you see any connections between your past mistakes, Satan’s lies and your present temptations?

Prayer Strategy

Write Your Prayer:Use your prayer cards and write a prayer asking God to forgive you of your past!

Here are some scriptures you might consider adding into your prayer strategy for your past:

  • Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV)
  • Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:4-5 (ESV)
  • My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.  2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
  • Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)
